Guardrails AI
LLM output validation framework that wraps LLM calls with typed validators, reasks on failure, and provides a hub of community-built validators for format, content, and semantic constraints.
Score Breakdown
⚙ Agent Friendliness
🔒 Security
Guardrails Hub validators are community-contributed and should be reviewed before use in production; malicious validators could access LLM inputs/outputs. API key for Hub stored as env var.
⚡ Reliability
Best When
You need structured, typed LLM outputs with automatic retry-on-failure and want to compose reusable validators from the Guardrails Hub community registry.
Avoid When
Your primary concern is controlling conversation topics or preventing jailbreaks at the dialogue level rather than validating the format or content of individual LLM outputs.
Use Cases
- • Enforcing structured JSON output schemas on LLM responses with automatic reask when the model returns malformed data
- • Validating that agent-generated SQL or code passes safety checks (no DROP TABLE, no shell injection) before execution
- • PII detection and redaction in LLM outputs before returning results to end users in compliance-sensitive applications
- • Semantic similarity validators that verify an LLM answer stays on-topic relative to a reference document
- • Composing multiple validators in a Guard to enforce format, content safety, and business-logic constraints in a single pass
Not For
- • Conversation flow control or topical guardrails on what users can ask — use NeMo Guardrails for that instead
- • Real-time streaming validation where adding reask latency is unacceptable
- • Non-Python environments — the core library is Python-only
Interface
Authentication
Guardrails Hub validators may require a free Guardrails account and GUARDRAILS_API_KEY for downloading validators. Core library works without auth.
Pricing
Apache 2.0 open source core. Guardrails Hub uses a token for validator downloads.
Agent Metadata
Known Gotchas
- ⚠ Reask loops can silently consume multiple LLM API calls per Guard invocation — agents must set max_retries to cap cost and latency
- ⚠ Guardrails Hub validators must be installed via 'guardrails hub install' before use; missing validators raise runtime ImportError not a helpful configuration error
- ⚠ RAIL XML spec is a legacy format alongside the newer Pydantic-based approach — online examples mix both and they are not interchangeable
- ⚠ The Guard server (for remote validation) adds network latency and requires a separate process; agents using it must handle connection failures
- ⚠ Validators that call external APIs (e.g., semantic similarity via embeddings) add unpredictable latency and can fail independently of the LLM call
