Aider
AI pair programming tool that runs in the terminal. Aider gives LLMs access to your codebase via git context and uses a structured diff format (SEARCH/REPLACE blocks) to make precise code edits. Chat with aider to ask it to implement features, fix bugs, or refactor code — it edits files directly and commits changes to git. Supports all major LLM providers. Benchmark leader for code editing tasks. Used as both a standalone tool and as a library in other AI coding tools.
Score Breakdown
⚙ Agent Friendliness
🔒 Security
Apache 2.0 open source. Local execution — no data sent to aider servers; only to chosen LLM provider. Code is sent to LLM API — ensure code doesn't contain secrets before sharing with LLM. Git tracks all changes for auditability.
⚡ Reliability
Best When
You want terminal-based AI code editing that works with git, supports any LLM, and makes precise targeted edits rather than large rewrites.
Avoid When
You need IDE integration, web-based access, or collaborative coding — Cursor, Copilot, or cloud IDE tools serve these needs.
Use Cases
- • Implement features in existing codebases via terminal chat with LLM assistance that makes real file edits and commits
- • Automate bulk refactoring across large codebases with aider's CLI scripting (aider --message 'fix all type errors')
- • Build AI coding agents using aider's Python API to integrate LLM-based code editing into custom agent pipelines
- • Debug existing code by giving aider the failing test + relevant source files and asking it to fix the failure
- • Generate tests, documentation, or repetitive code patterns across many files using aider's multi-file context support
Not For
- • Non-git projects — aider is tightly integrated with git for change tracking; works best in git repositories
- • Web-based coding environments — aider is a terminal tool; use Cursor or Copilot for IDE integration
- • Real-time collaborative coding — aider is single-user terminal tool; not designed for multiplayer code editing
Interface
Authentication
Requires API key for LLM provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.) via environment variables (ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, OPENAI_API_KEY). No aider-specific auth. Each LLM provider billing applies.
Pricing
Aider is Apache 2.0 open source. The tool itself is free; you pay for LLM API calls. Claude Sonnet is recommended by benchmarks. A typical coding session costs $0.10-$2.00 in LLM API costs.

Known Gotchas
- ⚠ Aider's file context is limited by LLM context window — large codebases require selective file addition (/add file.py) rather than entire repo context; too many files degrade edit quality
- ⚠ Aider's SEARCH/REPLACE edit format requires exact match of the SEARCH block — code that's been reformatted or has subtle whitespace differences causes edit failures
- ⚠ Aider automatically commits changes to git — using aider in a shared repository without a feature branch risks polluting main branch history
- ⚠ Automated scripting (aider --message '...' --yes-always) applies all changes without human review — review diffs carefully or use --dry-run for validation before automated application
- ⚠ LLM context window limits determine how many files can be added — claude-3-5-sonnet supports 200K tokens but very large repos still require strategic file selection
- ⚠ Aider's benchmark rankings are for specific models and may not reflect your specific codebase type — evaluate model choice based on your language and task type, not just benchmark ranking
